Sofia Goggia emotional: “My heart beats faster”

Even though the Olympic winter is still a long way off, Sofia Goggia's thoughts are already circling around this major event – even when she's in the middle of the sea.

When Sofia Goggia hits the slopes, everyone knows it's going to be a ride on the razor's edge. The downhill skier is famous and infamous for her fearless, rustic, and unruly style. But Goggia also has another side. A profound, sentimental, and thoughtful one. On Instagram, the 32-year-old regularly writes poetic texts that get under your skin.

Just like recently, when Goggia stumbled upon an enchanting island on vacation. "In western Sicily, there's a wild island. Spartan, yet beautiful and authentic. Dolomite rocks plunge into the green sea. When I saw it from the boat, I was speechless with its beauty," Goggia wrote on Instagram.

Longing for Cortina d'Ampezzo

Although winter and snow were far away, Goggia's thoughts revolved around skiing, Cortina, and thus also the Olympic Games. "I was on the dinghy, yes, but my mind was elsewhere... Despite the salt water on my skin and the sun warming it, I found myself at that moment on the old triple chairlift in Cortina, the one we take in winter at sunrise, from which we admire, in reverent silence, the Tofane Mountains as the first rays of light turn them orange."

Goggia continued: "I wanted to contemplate the sunset, searching for that poetry I always experience in Cortina and that I can never tire of. I was moved, and my heart beat faster," he said emotionally.

The Olympic journey begins on Tuesday

It's no coincidence that Goggia chose Cortina d'Ampezzo. Olympic medals will be awarded on the infamous Tofane in February – and Sofia Goggia is hoping to fulfill a big dream there. Winning an Olympic medal in her own country is the ultimate achievement for an athlete. Her schedule for the Winter Games begins on Tuesday. Then Goggia – along with the Delago sisters Nicol and Nadia – will depart for her first ski training camp in Zermatt-Cervinia.
