Safety: Innovations in the ski circus

Starting with the next World Cup season, the International Ski Federation (FIS) will introduce the mandatory use of airbags in speed disciplines and the wearing of cut-resistant underwear.

As part of a package of safety measures, an agreement was also reached to ban the controversial carbon shin insoles, which had recently been used by some stars such as Marco Odermatt. The FIS Council's approval of the changes in June is now merely a formality.

The use of airbags had actually been decided before last winter, but many players were able to circumvent the requirement to wear the protective clothing with automatic deployment in the event of a fall by obtaining exemptions. All three measures now approved also apply to continental series such as the European Cup.
