Not enough for a World Cup medal

Dorothea Wierer and Tommaso Giacomel missed out on a World Championship medal in the single mixed relay at the Biathlon World Championships in Lenzerheide.

7th place: That was all that was possible for Wierer and Giacomel on Thursday. The South Tyrolean had been ill recently and it was noticeable. Wierer needed a total of five reloads at the shooting range (which was still OK), but the 34-year-old was unable to keep up with the world's best in terms of running. Even Giacomel's almost perfect performance (only one reload and a good performance on the trail) was of no use.

Italy was never really on course for a medal. This is not surprising given Wierer's state of health. Others were able to celebrate at the top: Gold went to the experienced French duo Julia Simon and Quentin Fillon Maillet. Norway took silver in the form of Johannes Thingnes Bø and Ragnhild Femsteinevik. They used a total of 15 reloads. Bronze went to the Germans Justus Strelow and Franziska Preuß.

The Swiss had to bite the bullet again. The Swiss are still waiting for a medal at a Biathlon World Championship, although they have often come close at home. Niklas Hartweg and Amy Baserga had to settle for fourth place in the single mixed relay. One less reload - and they would have won a medal.

Closed on Friday

The last rest day of the World Championships in Lenzerheide is scheduled for Friday. The two relays will continue on Saturday before the championships conclude with the mass starts on Sunday.
