S+Column | Olympic Flame for Amatrice

The timely completion of the bobsleigh track in Cortina was an organizational masterpiece and demonstrated that with sufficient funds and political pressure, the seemingly impossible can be achieved. Our columnist Sigi Heinrich wishes such a combination had been applied to the reconstruction of the communities around Amatrice, which were devastated by an earthquake ten years ago.

The Olympic avalanche is rolling unstoppably towards northern Italy. And everything is supposed to be beautiful, fantastic, magnificent, unique. Sustainable, too. I almost forgot, the buzzword of the day. So, one can, indeed must, automatically loosen the purse strings a few euros. The coins practically fall from the till on their own, and bills flutter like autumn leaves in the now rather crisp air. Who hasn't yet, who wants another go? A bobsleigh and luge track is on the wish list. No problem. As long as it's nothing more than a simple tube on the mountain. It would, after all, replace the old, dilapidated, yet so historically significant track that was available to the Olympians in 1956. How much does something so exquisite cost? One simply doesn't ask.
