Figure skating world mourns the loss of Julia Marie Gaiser

The figure skating world is shocked after the deaths of two young athletes within a few days.

Both Julia Marie Gaiser and Matilda Ferrari were killed when they were struck by a truck. Gaiser was 23 years old, Ferrari 15.

The South Tyrolean Gaiser died on September 11, while cycling home from training in Salzburg, Austria. The truck driver reportedly tested negative for breathalyzer.

“Julia’s laughter and commitment touched everyone”

"Julia was more than just a competitor—she was a shining light in the figure skating community, remembered for her warmth, kindness, and the inspiration she gave to younger skaters. Her laughter and dedication touched all who had the privilege of knowing her," the International Skating Union (ISU) said.

Gaiser leaves a void that cannot be filled, the world governing body said. "But her spirit and love for this sport will always be remembered."

Ferraris dreamed of participating in the Olympics

Ferrari died four days after Gaiser—she, too, was struck by a truck. According to media reports, she was on her way to school when the accident occurred. She "showed great dedication and passion for figure skating," an ISU statement said. "She dreamed of one day competing in the Winter Olympics."
