Flora Tabanelli has been seriously injured.

The diagnosis: Flora Tabanelli is fighting for the Olympics

Italy's great freestyle hope, Flora Tabanelli, suffered a serious injury in training. The diagnosis is now in.

Tabanelli underwent an MRI scan and a thorough examination by the Italian Ski Federation's (FISI) medical commission, headed by Dr. Andrea Panzeri, at the La Madonnina Clinic in Milan on Friday morning. The examination revealed that the 17-year-old had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.

Given the importance of the Olympic season, Tabanelli will begin a month-long rehabilitation program at the J/Medical clinic in Turin on Monday. This will be crucial for all further decisions. Should his knee respond positively to the treatment, further, more targeted rehabilitation could follow to enable his participation in the Olympics in February.

If this is not possible, surgery will be planned. Then the Olympics would no longer be an option. Tabanelli suffered a serious fall while landing after a jump during training in Stubai. The Italian won the overall Big Air World Cup title last year. Tabanelli has already triumphed three times in the World Cup – twice in slopestyle. Furthermore, the young woman from Emilia-Romagna was crowned Big Air World Champion in Engadin at the end of March.
