Gunsch wins bronze at the Ski Cross World Championships

Yanick Gunsch provided a South Tyrolean highlight at the 2025 Freestyle Skiing World Championships in the Engadine. The 28-year-old ski crosser from Matsch in the Vinschgau valley won the bronze medal alongside Jole Galli in a thrilling mixed final.

The final score will be settled – that's what Yanick Gunsch and Jole Galli must have thought after the dramatic decision in the mixed ski cross final at the World Championships in Engadin. Gunsch opened the fight for gold alongside Ryan Regez (Switzerland 1), Youri Duplessis Kergomard (France 1), and Melvin Tchiknavorian (France 2), but got off to the worst start of the quartet and trailed his rivals. Despite trailing by over a second at one point, the South Tyrolean didn't give up and was even able to close the gap on the opposing trio by about three-tenths of a second in the final section.

His teammate Galli went into the second section of the final with a deficit of 0,97 seconds – and finally turned it up a notch. On the plateau, which was dotted with small camel humps, the 29-year-old exceeded her own expectations and made up a lot of ground. In this section, Galli left the Frenchwoman Marielle Berger Sabbatel behind. The Italian then set her sights on Jade Grillet Aubert and Fanny Smith, but missed the silver medal by just a few centimeters in the photo finish. Gold went to local favorites Regez and Smith, who had already been crowned world champions in the individual events, while Tchiknavorian and Grillet Aubert were delighted with the silver medal.
