Even at 45, Roland Fischnaller is among the world's elite in parallel giant slalom – the world champion from South Tyrol proved this once again on Saturday. In Scuol, Graubünden, he sped into the final and met his teammate Mirko Felicetti there. Felicetti got off to a better start on the blue course and was in the lead at the first two split times. However, in the lower section, Fischnaller impressed with a precise and direct line, overtaking Felicetti. With a lead of 0,16 seconds, he secured his second victory of the season after Carezza and the 24th win of his career.
“Scuol has always been difficult for me,” the victor explained afterwards in the official winner's interview. “Now I'm overjoyed. That was one of the toughest races of my career; I always had to take the red line. Very, very hard. I'm 99,9 percent sure this is my last time in Scuol, and I've never had a good result here before. So I can only be happy.”
The Olympics are getting closer for Fischnaller
Curiously, despite his victory in Carezza shortly before Christmas, Fischnaller has not yet secured his ticket for the Olympic Games (February 6th to 22nd). not yet certain – unlike Aaron March and Maurizio Bormolini. With his impressive performance in Scuol, the veteran, who has won three of the last five parallel giant slalom races across seasons, has likely catapulted himself into pole position in the fight for the two remaining starting places.Roland Fischnaller at the World Cup in Scuol. © ANSA / GIAN EHRENZELLER
Daniele Bagozza from Val Gardena reached the quarterfinals on Saturday, while the other Italian players, including March, Bormolini, Gabriel Messner, Tommy Rabanser, Edwin Coratti, and Fabian Lantschner, were eliminated in the qualifying rounds. In the women's competition, Jasmin Coratti from South Tyrol was knocked out in the round of 16, with the victory going to Germany's Ramona Theresia Hofmeister ahead of Italy's Elisa Caffont.
