In the new Olympic ice track: World Cup returns to Cortina

Eighteen years ago, Cortina d'Ampezzo hosted its last World Cup event on the ice track. This weekend, it's happening again. The Olympic track will be officially inaugurated.

Skeleton and bobsleigh are on the program this weekend at the brand-new ice track in Cortina d'Ampezzo. The track, named "Eugenio Monti," will thus host its first official competitions.

The competition weekend kicks off on Friday with three skeleton races, while on Saturday and Sunday the bobsleighs will hurtle down the Olympic ice track. Incidentally, bobsleigh pilot Patrick Baumgartner, also from South Tyrol, will be part of the historic World Cup return to Cortina.

Training has already taken place in Cortina over the past few weeks. Athletes from 30 nations have completed around 120 test runs, as announced by the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI). The new track has 16 curves (previously 11) and is 160 meters longer than the old ice channel.
