Champions League experience for HC Gröden

The Hockey Club Gherdëina has become active in the transfer market and has signed its first foreign player for the new season: Sacha Guimond.

The 34-year-old defenseman has signed a one-year contract and will wear number 43 for the Fury. "Sacha has gained experience throughout Europe," emphasizes sporting director Joel Brugnoli. "He is a leader both on and off the ice. Last year, he played with Sheffield in the Champions Hockey League, which is a testament to his great quality. He is an outstanding skater who brings power-play qualities and will lead our defense in the new season."

The Canadian began his professional career in 2012 in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). With 55 points, he was promptly named the league's top rookie and top defenseman. He first encountered European ice hockey in 2015 when he signed with the Slovakian first division team Banska Bystrica.

The following season, he returned to the ECHL before moving to Olimpija Ljubljana in the ICE Hockey League (ICEHL) in 2016. After scoring 31 points in 50 games, the 1,90-meter-tall, 85-kilogram defenseman moved on to HC Innsbruck, where he spent three years under contract. He scored 61 points in 140 games.

He concluded his time in the ICEHL with a one-year stint with the Bratislava Capitals. From 2021 to 2024, he demonstrated his skills playing for the French first division club Rouen. He won the title twice and became the league's top-scoring defenseman in 2023. His last stop before joining HCG was the Sheffield Steelers in the British Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL).
