Wipptal Broncos take 3rd place

First showdown on the last matchday of the big Serie A final round in Milan: The Wipptal Broncos secured the bronze medal against Cortina in front of almost 3.000 spectators.

After an extremely evenly matched game, Sterzing secured third place in the IHL Serie A at the "Milano Hockey Finals". They defeated Cortina 2-1 in a penalty shootout.

The two semifinal losers from Saturday, both missing several key players, battled it out in a closely contested match late Sunday morning. Luciano Zandegiacomo provided the first highlight with a mid-range shot in the fifth minute. Cortina, however, responded to Wipptal's opening goal: Massimo Pietroniro equalized just six minutes later, making it 1-1. While both sides had chances after that, no further goals were scored – until the penalty shootout. There, Broncos players Zandegiacomo and James Livingston converted their penalties, while on the other end, only Oskari Kalajanniska managed to beat Wipptal's goalie, Dominik Groh.

The match between Wipptan and Cortina opened the final day. At 3:30 p.m., Kaltern and Alleghe will play for the Coppa Italia, while at 8 p.m. Asiago and the Ritten Buam will clash in the battle for the 92nd Scudetto of Italian ice hockey.
