Ambrì Piotta cannot stop defending champion Augsburg

The showdown between the DEL club from Bavaria and the traditional Ticino club was already treated in advance as a treat for South Tyrolean ice hockey fans. The game completely lived up to these expectations. Ambrì Piotta in particular brought wind into the encounter right from the start and, in the opening minutes - helped by several situations with the majority - tied Augsburg into their third.

The goal to make it 1-0 for the Swiss was the logical conclusion. Daniel Steiner directed the puck past former Rittner Chris Mason into the goal in the eighth minute. This was the initial spark for lively target shooting, because the Panthers' reaction didn't take long to arrive: Louie Caporusso was there in the 13th minute and provided a quick counterattack. Then it was the Swiss' turn again. Alexei Dostoinov made the loud Ambrì fans cheer after a fine individual action. But once again the lead was only to last for a short time, as Ryan Bayda equalized 2-2 eleven seconds before the first third break.

The second twenty minutes continued at the same pace. Both teams set an unusually high pace for their preparation for the season and were not lacking in tough performances. The referees repeatedly had to interrupt the encounter and send players to the “cooler”. However, no goals were scored in the second half - also because the attacking lines were far too careless with their chances. Bayda from Augsburg, for example, failed several times from an excellent position.

Augsburg has more staying power

However, the Swabians' opening goal was only postponed, as James Bettauer hit the mark in the early stages of the final third. The Canadian defender fired a rocket from the blue line that left Ambrì goalie Zurkirchen no chance to defend. At this point, the NLA club was operating with one less player on the ice. Five minutes before the end, TJ Trevelyan made it 4-2. The Ticino team managed a decisive counterattack through Reto Kobach, but Augsburg didn't let anything go in the last two minutes of the game.

“The cleverness of Augsburg won in the end. But both teams really provided entertainment,” was the succinct conclusion from German national coach Pat Cortina, who mingled with the spectators in the Würtarena. He named Jeff Woywitka (Augsburg) and Adam Hall (Ambrì) as the best players of the match.

The last group game between Olten and Lorenskog will take place in Neumarkt on Saturday (20.30 p.m.).
