From the NHL to the ICE: The transfer hammer Nick Bonino

The ICE Hockey League has a new figurehead since this Saturday. An NHL star with a South Tyrolean past is moving to the league!

HK Olimpija Ljubljana has presented Nick Bonino as a new signing. The long-time US national player is moving directly from the NHL to the ICE Hockey League.


Bonino is a well-known name in this country not only because of his two Stanley Cups, but also because of his past at HC Neumarkt. During the 2012/13 NHL lockout, the NHL star moved to Italy's second league, to the surprise of many, and scored an incredible 19 points in 52 games for the Lower Austrians.

The 36-year-old brings with him a wealth of experience from the prestigious NHL, where he scored over 973 points in 400 appearances. His career took him to renowned teams such as the Anaheim Ducks, where he made his NHL debut, the Vancouver Canucks, the Nashville Predators, the Minnesota Wild and the Pittsburgh Penguins, with whom he won two Stanley Cups (2016 and 2017). Last season he played for the New York Rangers.

Bonino also left his mark on the international level. He participated in several world championships with the US national team, won two bronze medals and led the team as captain in 2023.
