FC Bayern wins last home game with Thomas Müller

On Saturday, Bayern played their final home game of the season, with veteran Thomas Müller taking center stage. Meanwhile, two teams have been relegated to the 2. Bundesliga.

FC Bayern celebrated a hard-fought victory in Thomas Müller's final Bundesliga home game. Barely a week after clinching the German championship, the Munich team defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach 75.000-2 (0-1) in front of 0 spectators in their own stadium. Harry Kane (31st minute) and Michael Olise (90th minute) scored the goals for the hosts.

Before the match on the penultimate league matchday, Müller was officially dismissed. The 35-year-old will no longer have a contract with Bayern for the coming season. Manuel Neuer made his comeback in goal for Munich after more than two months out injured and made several desperate saves.

Bochum and Holstein Kiel are relegated

While Bayern celebrated their championship title, there were sad faces at VfL Bochum and Holstein Kiel. Both teams were relegated from the 1. Bundesliga. While Holstein Kiel lost 1-2 at home to Freiburg, Bochum suffered a 1-4 defeat to Mainz in front of their own fans. This means that neither team can close the gap to 1. FC Heidenheim, who won 3-0 (1-0) at Union Berlin, on the final matchday.

VfL coach Dieter Hecking sent a remarkable signal last week, hoping to mobilize his last remaining strength in the relegation battle. Despite the rather hopeless situation, the head coach extended his contract, which was originally only valid if the club avoided relegation, until 2027 and intends to stay with the club in the second division. However, Hecking's hopes of having a chance to stay in the top flight on the final matchday were dashed against Mainz.

The recently struggling Rhineland-Palatinate team took the lead shortly before halftime with a superb free kick from Nadiem Amiri (45th + 3'). Phillipp Mwene (53rd), Jonathan Burkardt (73rd), and Paul Nebel (90th + 3') sealed the victory. For Bochum, it's already their seventh Bundesliga relegation. Gerrit Holtmann's goal (84th) was not enough.

Bundesliga adventure ends for Kiel after one season

The league newcomers from Kiel looked like certain relegation for a long time before the northern Germans made things even more exciting again with seven points from their last three matches. Lasse Rosenboom further increased Kiel's chances with his 1-0 goal in the 24th minute. But Johan Manzambi (45th + 2) and Lucas Höler (58th) turned the game around with goals for Freiburg. The Breisgau club is now a little closer to the Champions League. For Kiel, the Bundesliga adventure is over after just one season.
