In the 3-2 victory, Natan Tella scored after just 25 seconds to make it 1-0 for the double winners, and Patrik Schick (8th, 19th) added another. Jamie Gittens (12th) and Serhou Guirassy (79th/penalty) scored for Dortmund. Leverkusen moved within one point of league leaders Bayern Munich. The Munich team will be visiting Mönchengladbach on Saturday. BVB, which has been severely weakened by illness, remains in sixth place for the time being, but could slip out of the international rankings this weekend.
Tella's goal was the second fastest goal of the league season. Only Bayern's Jamal Musiala was faster. Seven minutes later, Schick scored, standing completely free in front of the BVB goal. Dortmund did not give up and quickly got back into the game. Gittens beat Bayer keeper Lukas Hradecky from close range. But the joy was short-lived. Jeremie Frimpong crossed into the middle, where Schick again only had to push it in. It was the Czech's eleventh goal of the season. He scored all of his goals in the last six games.

Without Florian Wirtz, whom Alonso left on the bench for a good hour, Leverkusen retreated at times. Dortmund let the ball circulate, but rarely found gaps. Things got exciting again in the finish. Referee Tobias Stieler awarded a penalty to Dortmund after viewing the video images and a foul on Julien Duranville, which Guirassy converted safely. Dortmund now pressed for an equalizer, but could not prevail decisively. The match had started 15 minutes late due to heavy traffic.
