Struber new coach of 1. FC Köln

Former Salzburg coach Gerhard Struber is the new coach of the traditional German football club 1. FC Köln.

The 47-year-old Salzburg native signed a contract with the second division club on Tuesday afternoon, the Bundesliga relegated team announced on Wednesday. No details were given about the duration. Struber was most recently coach of Red Bull Salzburg, and the dethroned serial champions parted ways with him in mid-April.


Before his unsuccessful engagement in Salzburg, Struber was head coach of FC Liefering, Bundesliga club WAC, English second division club FC Barnsley and the MLS club New York Red Bulls. "Gerhard fits our requirements profile perfectly. His ability to fit in with the FC game concept and his competence and experience in developing young players are two examples," explained Cologne managing director Christian Keller. Struber "wants to immerse himself very quickly and really deeply in the FC world in order to pursue our goals and achieve them."

Struber is the third Austrian coach at 1970. FC Köln after Ernst Ocwirk (1971-2013) and Peter Stöger (2017-1).
