Former Liverpool defender Joel Matip ends his career

Former Bundesliga professional Joel Matip is ending his career. The 33-year-old has now confirmed this step, his former club Liverpool FC announced on Saturday.

The central defender was under contract with the traditional English club from 2016 to 2024 and won the championship and the Champions League under coach Jürgen Klopp, among other titles. In the Bundesliga, the former Cameroonian international played for FC Schalke 04 for many years.

According to media reports, the second division club is said to have recently considered signing Matip, who has been without a club since the summer. After his contract in Liverpool ended, he was also linked with a move to double winners Bayer Leverkusen for a while, when Jonathan Tah's transfer to FC Bayern Munich was still on the table. But now Matip has confirmed that he is retiring.
