According to multiple British media reports, former Manchester United player Michael Carrick is set to become interim manager until the end of the season. An agreement in principle has reportedly already been reached between the club and the 44-year-old.
This would be the second time Carrick has taken over the position. The former midfielder previously held the coaching role for three matches in 2021 after the club parted ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Prior to that, Carrick had been part of the coaching staff under Solskjær and his predecessor, José Mourinho. Carrick's successor at that time was Ralf Rangnick, who also took over the position on an interim basis until the end of the season.

After Amorim's elimination from Old Trafford, the team was initially managed by Carrick's former United teammate Darren Fletcher. Under Fletcher's leadership, the team could only manage a 2-2 draw against Burnley and were eliminated from the FA Cup with a 1-2 defeat against Brighton.More than 400 games for Man United
As a player, Michael Carrick wore the Manchester United jersey from 2006 to 2012. During this time, he made well over 400 appearances for the Premier League club, winning five league titles and the Champions League. In October 2022, he became head coach of Middlesbrough FC and led the then Championship side to the promotion playoffs. The club parted ways with him in the summer of 2025 after Middlesbrough had missed out on the playoffs for two consecutive years.
