Tragedy: Liverpool striker dies in car crash

A tragic traffic accident occurred in northern Spain on Thursday night, killing two footballers.

Terrible news has rocked the football world: Diogo Jota, Portuguese international and Liverpool FC attacking star, died in a serious car accident in Spain overnight from Wednesday to Thursday. His younger brother André Jota, a professional footballer with Portuguese second division club FC Penafiel, also died.

According to local media reports, the accident occurred around 1.30:52 a.m. on the A-XNUMX motorway near Cernadilla, a small town near the Spanish-Portuguese border. The brothers' vehicle left the roadway, overturned, and caught fire. The flames spread quickly, leaving the two occupants with no chance of survival.

Success in football and private life

Jota moved from Wolverhampton to Liverpool at Anfield in 2020 for over €40 million. Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds. His achievements include two Carabao Cups, one FA Cup, one Community Shield, and the 2024/25 Premier League title. Jota was also successful with the Portuguese national team, scoring 14 goals in 49 appearances and winning two Nations League titles.

Particularly tragic: Diogo Jota only married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, 2025. The football player also leaves behind three children.
