Donnarumma suddenly sidelined at PSG?

Gianluigi Donnarumma, the Azzurri's number one goalkeeper, is reportedly on the verge of being fired by Paris Saint Germain. The capital club announced the signing of a French goalkeeper on Saturday evening – with a dig at Donnarumma.

In recent months, PSG fans have been in a celebratory mood: first they won the league, then the cup, before coach Luis Enrique's team also clinched the Champions League. The only time the French club lost to Chelsea was in the final of the Club World Cup in the USA, a 0-3 defeat.

One of the main contributors to all these successes was Gianluigi Donnarumma. The 26-year-old, who moved to Paris in the summer of 2021, delivered several strong performances and was a reliable support for his team.

However, contract negotiations with the club proved rather difficult. The Italian's contract expires in June 2026, and so far, no agreement has been reached on an extension. Donnarumma was already close to leaving Paris: The truth is, his performances are sometimes quite inconsistent.

On Saturday evening, PSG announced the signing of Lucas Chevalier on social media. The 23-year-old joins from league rivals Lille OSC for over €50 million, making him the most expensive French goalkeeper.

Farewell to Donnarumma becomes an issue

When announcing the transfer, PSG also took a slight swipe at Donnarumma. "Chevalier is strong on the line and in one-on-one situations. He also has outstanding skills with his feet," the club wrote on social media. This is a swipe because Donnarumma has often been criticized in the past for his inaccurate footwork.

Enrique is also known to be no big fan of the Italian international goalkeeper. Therefore, there are many indications that Chevalier could become the new number one in the PSG goal. Donnarumma could therefore be considering a departure. There are currently no concrete rumors about this.
