Nico Williams rejects all top clubs

Nico Williams, who was courted by FC Bayern and FC Barcelona, has decided against a summer move and surprisingly extended his contract with Athletic Club for the long term.

The 22-year-old European football champion, who was being chased by half of Europe, signed a new contract running until 2035. The transfer fee stipulated in an exit clause was "increased by more than 50 percent," the Spanish first division club announced.

According to media reports, the old working contract, which runs until 2027, included an exit clause amounting to 62 million euros.

Feel-good factor was crucial

"When it comes to making decisions, the most important thing for me is to listen to my heart," Williams said in a video message on Instagram. "I'm where I want to be, with my people. This is my home. Aupa Athletic." League rivals FC Barcelona had vigorously courted the Spanish international. FC Bayern Munich were also rumored to be interested in Williams.
