“Please go”: At Inter, things are not going well

After Inter's surprise elimination in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup, captain Lautaro Martínez expressed his disappointment and sharp tongue to his teammates. But who was he referring to?

The Nerazzurri lost 0-2 to Fluminense on Monday, missing out on a place in the quarterfinals. Martínez criticized the lack of attitude and mentality of many players and demanded consequences: "I want to fight for the big titles. Whoever wants to stay can stay. Whoever doesn't want to stay can leave. We need players who want to be here. We wear an important jersey. We need a top-level mentality—or please leave."

These statements reflect the frustration of the 27-year-old Argentinian, who already spoke of a "long and exhausting season" and apologized to the fans after the 0-5 defeat in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Particularly controversial: According to Italian media reports, his comments were apparently aimed directly at Hakan Calhanoglu, whose future at Inter is currently unclear. Inter president Beppe Marotta confirmed that the criticism was directed at the Turkish midfielder and announced talks about his future. Martínez also emphasized that Inter must enter the upcoming Serie A season with a "top mentality" to challenge for titles again. The season opener against Torino in August will be the first test for the team and the new coaching staff under Cristian Chivu.
