Maurizio Pellegrino should lead the FCS to stay in the league - UPDATE

Just under two hours passed between the final whistle, which sealed FCS's 1-3 defeat against relegation rivals Como, and the announcement of coach Alfredo Sebastiani's leave of absence. The trained football teacher had led South Tyrol's only professional club to promotion to the first division for the first time last season to wild celebrations, but a three-month dry spell and just five points in ten second half games have now been his downfall.

Sports director Luca Piazzi has reportedly been in contact with possible successors in the coaching position for several weeks. Spicy detail on the side: Piazzi in particular is said to have repeatedly advocated for Sebastiani to be given leave of absence in the past, as their relationship was badly damaged after repeated criticism of Piazzi's purchasing policy and both had been avoiding each other for some time.

Pellegrino should fix it

Among the possible successor candidates were the names of Roberto Cevoli, former Monza coach, ex-Cremonese coach Roberto Venturato and Maurizio Trombetta, who has already played in the Champions League with the Romanian champions Cluj. From the beginning, Maurizio Pellegrino was considered a promising candidate and was said to have been contacted by the club for the first time a few weeks ago. There was no official statement for a long time, but the decision had already been made: Pellegrino signed a contract with the FCS on Tuesday until the end of the season .

The 45-year-old Sicilian is no stranger to the Lega Pro; the former Catania professional has been under contract with several third and fourth division teams over the past ten years. He celebrated his greatest success so far at his first coaching position in Catania, when he led the current first division team into Serie B together with Francesco Graziani. However, in the following 2002/03 season he was released and then moved to Padova (C1) via Paternò (C1) and Lanciano (C1). After two successful years in Veneto, he went to Martina (C1) and later to Lecco (1st Division) before joining Cassino in the 2nd Division last season. Now Pellegrino is supposed to be in charge of FC Südtirol and avert a return to the fourth division.

Pellegrino led training at FC Südtirol for the first time on Tuesday afternoon. It was then presented to the public. At the press conference, the new trainer already turned his attention to next Monday's game against Spal: "With Kiem, Mirri and Alfredo Romano, I will be missing three important players due to a suspension. Franchini is injured, Sorrentino is suffering from muscular problems. But maybe Traore and Brugger fit for action again." The main goal is of course to stay in the league.

Pellegrino said about FC Südtirol that he found an intact team. "I've watched videos of the last few games and the team seems quite organized to me. At this moment it's important to awaken the players' lost enthusiasm and restore confidence in their own strengths. This is my primary task. How will it be? "Be a team exhibition? I have time to get an idea this week, but I could very well imagine a 4-3-3 system. I have to admit that I particularly like this system of play," concluded the new coach.
