Stefan Gasser: “I’m proud of St. Martin and my boys”

It will be a happy farewell when Stefan Gasser takes his place on the St. Martin bench for the last time next Sunday. The 57-year-old trainer will then end his 27th season as a coach and a three-year cycle with the Passeirers. Then Stefan Gasser has had enough - because he was the one who drew a line in the sand. “It's right. It was three very nice years. We played a great championship. This is the credit of the club and the boys. On Sunday we play against Alense. We are one point ahead and we want to finish the season in second place. It will be very difficult because we have a lot of suspended players and are running on the edge. The team will give everything, but we have already achieved incredible things this year.”

Series D, a “forbidden” dream Stefan Gasser doesn't mince his words when he addresses the topic of advancement. “Dro is stronger than us and other teams also have greater potential. We fought for the title, but it would be too big a step for the club and the boys. We certainly didn't let up, but it's very difficult to maintain the right tension until the end. In the last few weeks we have missed important points, but that was also because the pressure was great. St. Martin cannot afford to be promoted to Serie D. It’s a healthy club and I accept that.”

The final spurt

Dro will probably be promoted to Serie D, but the best team was probably the team led by coach Stefan Gasser. Even though there are celebrations in the Passeiertal Valley, the past season was no picnic for South Tyrolean football. Two local clubs have already been relegated and more could be added. “It is a very physical football that is played in the top league. It is normal for cycles to have a beginning and an end. You can certainly feel the differences between South Tyrol and Trentino and in my opinion it was not a good idea to separate the two regional committees. There has been a lot of speculation about my future. I haven't signed anything yet. “I want to finish the season with St. Martin first, then I’ll look for a new position,” the coach concludes.
