At the weekend U16 Italian Championships in Sulmona

The boys' hopes rest primarily on Patrick Baú and Mirko Lepir. The 15-year-old Eisacktaler Baù has the third best time over 300 m in 36.32 seconds behind the Lombards David Zobbio (35.83) and Edoardo Scotti (36.00). Vinschger Lepir is also third in the Italian rankings in the long jump with 6.47 m behind Alessandro Marasco from Campania (6.82) and Francesco Barattini from Veneto (6.64). The Bolzano hurdle specialist Thomas Iellici could also be good for a podium finish. For the girls, however, a medal would be a real surprise. Merano walker Sara Buglisi has the best chances over 3km. Diana Caravaggi Esposito (300 m hurdles), Angela Kier (long distance) or Anna Menz (pentathlon) could also ensure a top spot. Last year at the title fights in Borgo Valsugana, the South Tyrolean U16 national team returned with three medals: Michael Albrecht from Meran won gold in the 300m, while Sophie Mayr from Pusteria won bronze in the pentathlon and Isabel Sader from Eisacktal in the long jump.
