Lisa Seppi is the Grand Prix queen

The Youth Grand Prix is a successful model for promoting young talent in the South Tyrolean regional association. The winner is not who runs the fastest or jumps the furthest in one discipline, but rather who is strongest in three disciplines, e.g. 80 m running, long jump and shot put. After five qualifying competitions, the best 20 in the U16 and U14 age groups qualified for the final. It was also a baptism of fire for the brand new athletics facility in the Combi Stadium in Meran.

In the last two years, Lisa Seppi narrowly missed out on winning the Grand Prix and had to give way to Valentine Alber. At the third attempt, the 15-year-old didn't miss out on overall victory. Seppi clearly won ahead of Alber and Stefanie Messner from SG Eisacktal. Alber decided not to do the long jump, but even with a good jump he wouldn't have been able to get close to Seppi. With 5.34 m, Seppi also achieved the best individual performance of the day in the long jump.

The leaders of the interim ranking also prevailed in the other three categories. Alessandro Monte (CSS da Vinci/U16) won the 80 m sprint and the shot put and took second place in the long jump. This meant that the GP victory could not be taken away from him. Monte's best performance was 9.63 seconds in the 80 m sprint. Magdalena Mittersteiner secured the second Grand Prix victory for SV Lana among the under-14s. Thanks to three second places, Mittersteiner clearly won ahead of Alessandra Realdon (CSS da Vinci). However, Mittersteiner's teammate Stefanie Gruber achieved the best individual performance with 44.70 m in the vortex. For the boys, Alex Baù (SG Eisacktal) ended the Grand Prix season undefeated. The man from Brixen had already won all five qualifying competitions. Baù won the sprint and vortex, but the best individual performance came from Simon Mair (South Tyrolean running club), who won the 600 m run in 1:39.71.

South Tyrol's youngsters are therefore well prepared for the U16 Italian Championships next weekend in Jesolo.
