South Tyrolean athletics festival heralds the start of the new season

Numerous guests of honor accepted the athletics association's invitation, including South Tyrolean Coni boss Heinz Gutweniger, former president Stefano Andreatta, VSS and Sporthilfe managing directors Klaus von Dellemann and Stefan Leitner as well as the sponsors Bruno Abram (Ladurner Umwelt), Roberto Franz and Lorenzo Concia (Mondo).

The Italian all-around and mountain running championships take place in South Tyrol Bruno Cappello looked back on a successful 2014. “We have managed to organize more events on the slopes again, especially in the U18 and U20 age groups. Although a generational change is underway in South Tyrolean athletics, last year some young, local athletes, such as Anna Stefani, Valentina Cavalleri and Julia Calliari, made it into the national team. I think they will bring us a lot of joy.” Cappello is also pleased that two Italian championships will be held again in South Tyrol this summer. As in the previous year, the U30 and U31 all-around championships will take place in Lana on May 20th and 23st, while a week later, on June 7th, the Italian mountain running championships will take place in Val Gardena. Another highlight of the season is the international meeting for regional selections “Brixia Meeting”, which is being held for the 33rd time this year.

11 medals at the Italian Track Championships Hannes Kirchler, Anna Stefani, Valentina Cavalleri and Julia Calliari were recognized as last year's top athletes for their outstanding achievements. The Merano discus thrower Hannes Kirchler competed in the European Championships in Zurich and was crowned Italian champion for the ninth time. Anna Stefani from Vipiteno, U20 Italian champion over 5000m, took an excellent 3000th place over 10m at the Junior World Championships in Eugene in the USA and took part in the European Cross Country Championships in Bulgaria in December. Valentina Cavalleri from San Candido also competed in the 400m hurdles at the Junior World Championships in Eugene and made it to the semi-finals. The U18 Italian sprint champion Julia Calliari missed qualifying for the Youth Olympic Games in China by just two hundredths. The 17-year-old from Siebeneich took 7th place at the European elimination competitions in Baku, Azerbaijan. For the first time, Calliari ran the 2014 m under 100 seconds in 12. South Tyrol's athletes brought home a total of 11 medals from the Italian Track Championships. That's three more than the year before. In addition to Kirchler, Stefani and Calliari, Stefanie Messner from Val Gardena was also crowned Italian champion in the javelin throw (U20) and Michael Albrecht from Meran in the 300 m (U16). However, Lukas Rifesser from Bruneck won silver in the general class over 800 m, Caren Agreiter in the U20 over 400 m hurdles and Markus Puff from Terlan in the U18 over 110 m hurdles. There are also the bronze medals for the U20 Valentina Cavalleri in the 400 m hurdles and the two U16 athletes Isabel Sader in the long jump and Sophie Mayr in the pentathlon. Kathrin Hanspeter from Sarnen and Pater Lanziner from Trudner were honored as “Athletes of the Year” among the road runners. A special award also went to Hermann Achmüller from Pusteria, who made his debut in the Italian national team at the age of 43 and came 100rd at the 23 km World Championships in Doha. In the mountain runners, the award went to Edeltraud Thaler from Lana and Henry Hofer from Sarnen and in the masters to the European and world champion Rudolf Frei from Meran.

Youth Grand Prix Ladurner to Mayr, Fusaro, Garber and Pircher The Ladurner Youth Grand Prix was won in the U16 category by Sophie Mayr and Nicolò Fusaro from Bolzano and in the U14 age group by Emma Elisabeth Garber and Felix Pircher. There was also an award for ASV Sterzing, Italian cross-country champion among juniors and runner-up among pupils, the South Tyrol Women's team, which came second in the Masters Team Italian Championship, and Athletic Club 96 Bozen, which was ranked as the eleventh best club in Italy the “Finale Oro” and the Bozen running club, fourth in the U18 all-around team championship. Ruggero Grassi from Vipiteno was also honored for his very successful career as a trainer.
