Drug drama: Formula 1 icon mourns daughter (21)

As Scheckter and his wife Clare announced in a statement, Ila died of a drug overdose on the night of October 17 - the day before she was due to go into rehab. The family explained that the 21-year-old was diagnosed with a brain tumor two years ago, which required her to undergo serious surgery. The young woman then suffered from epilepsy and developed panic fear. Fears caused Ila to eventually turn to drugs.

The family said a moving farewell to Ila, the fifth of the six Scheckter children, on social networks. “Ila unfairly had so many problems for so many years and the only positive thing is that she is now at peace and not in pain. She really wanted to get well and fought so hard for it,” wrote her brother Hugo. Heartbreaking messages Her mother Clare recalls: “Despite being very unwell, in September, with courage and determination, she joined Jody, me and her four brothers and younger sister in Monza for the 40th anniversary of Jody’s F1 World Championship. It was the last time we were united as a family and celebrated this milestone together.”

Jody Scheckter competed in a total of 1972 Grand Prix races in Formula 1980 between 112 and 1 and became world champion there in 1979 in a Ferrari car. Scheckter is remembered by Formula 1 fans primarily because he was the last Ferrari world champion for over 20 years before Michael Schumacher won the title again for the traditional racing team in the 2000 season.
