Max Verstappen: “We are not the fastest”

Max Verstappen is not making any predictions just before the start of the Formula 1 season.

However, the four-time Red Bull world champion is certain of one thing ahead of the opening race in Australia: "I know that we are not the fastest at the moment." The 27-year-old, who made his debut in the premier class of motorsport ten years ago in Melbourne, emphasized: "We have to be patient."

Verstappen can win the World Championship for the fifth time in a row this year, joining the three most successful drivers in Formula 1. Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, now 40, still racing for Ferrari, have each won seven titles. Argentinian Juan Manuel Fangio once triumphed five times.

Verstappen also pointedly asked himself what shape his new RB21 was in. The Dutchman, in a good mood but not particularly forthcoming, didn't offer an answer. "I don't know," he said instead at the official press conference. However, many things can change very quickly in Formula 1.

McLaren in pole position

Many are tipping the two McLarens as favorites. Last year, Verstappen prevailed in the Drivers' Championship, thanks largely to a strong first half, while McLaren's Lando Norris finished second. However, together with Oscar Piastri, who is aiming to become the first Australian to win his home Grand Prix this Sunday (05.00:XNUMX a.m.), the two secured the Constructors' Championship title for the long-established British team.
