Michael Schumacher's skiing accident and the consequences

Michael Schumacher had an accident while skiing on December 29, 2013. He fell above Meribel in the French Alps. At around 11.00 a.m., Schumacher crashed into a rock just a few meters away from the marked runway. He lost control and hit his head on another rock as he fell. The helmet Schumacher was wearing broke.

According to official information, Schumacher was approachable immediately after the accident, but he was confused. The Formula 1 record world champion was given first aid on the spot. He was supposed to be taken to Moutiers by helicopter. However, the head injuries that Schumacher sustained in the impact despite wearing a helmet were so serious that he could not be treated there. The rescue helicopter then flew him to Grenoble University Hospital.

Emergency head surgery Schumacher had to undergo emergency surgery. His life was in danger. Schumacher's family arrived in the afternoon. The following day, the doctors who treated him said this in a press conference: Schumacher suffered widespread brain injuries in the fall and his condition was described as “extremely serious”. He had to undergo a second operation to remove a hematoma on the left side of his brain.

Schumacher's life was in danger for a few more days. Towards the end of January, the anesthetics were reduced in order to initiate the recovery phase from the artificial coma. In June 2014, Schumacher's management announced that he was no longer in a coma. The now 2014-year-old has been at home in Gland, Switzerland, since September 49. There is no further information about Schumacher's condition. Only those closest to him know how he is doing.
