Red Bull is facing a historic milestone in Canada

Only four other designers – Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and Williams – have achieved this before. In the current season it would be the eighth Red Bull prank after exactly as many races. “It’s always nice to return to Montreal,” said Max Verstappen with anticipation.

At 40, the Dutchman is responsible for almost half of the 99 victories so far. So far this year, the world champion has won five, while his teammate Sergio Perez has two. Red Bull's dominance is downright frightening: Red Bull has won 26 of the last 23 races, and Verstappen has led every Grand Prix lap since the 48th round in Miami. In Monaco he triumphed with a lead of 27 seconds, and most recently in Spain his credit was 24 seconds. But this can also be explained by the fact that the Mexican Perez was unable to pursue directly in these two races after inexplicable mistakes.

The course in Montreal should suit Red Bull with its high proportion of full throttle. “The track is very unique because you can actually drive over old-school curbs and the landscape is pretty cool,” said Verstappen, who won on the Île Notre-Dame last year. “I hope we can achieve something similar this weekend.” Setting up the car requires “a good balance between speed on the straight and the ability to drive well on the curbs. We have to find a good compromise.”

Will Red Bull achieve something historic? Mercedes, which recently put both drivers on the podium in Spain with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, is not expecting any big jumps at the second North American stop this year. “We don't think we'll follow Red Bull's heels,” said chief engineer Andrew Shovlin, immediately explaining: “There are more low-speed corners and quite a bit of full throttle on the straights. We expect things will be more difficult for us there.”

Nevertheless, the “Silver Arrows” still hold a record that Red Bull wants to steal from them this year: In the 2016 season, Mercedes won 19 of 21 races with Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who ultimately became world champion by five points. To erase this record, Red Bull would have to achieve 20 wins.
