VIDEO | Antonelli bowls Verstappen out

A serious accident occurred at the start of the Formula 1 race in Spielberg, Austria. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli misjudged the situation and crashed into Max Verstappen.

The duo had completed just three corners before Antonelli's wheels locked, he lost control, and collided with Verstappen. Both drivers were forced to retire from the race – much to the chagrin of the numerous Dutch fans cheering live in Austria. Because both cars stopped on the track, a safety car period was deployed.

For Antonelli, who immediately admitted his guilt, it was his fourth pointless finish in the last five races. In between, he secured his first Formula 1 podium finish in Montreal. Verstappen, on the other hand, had an impressive streak snapped, having finished in the top spot in each of the last 31 races. His already slim chances of defending his title have now become even smaller.
