
Gino Bartali saved hundreds of Jewish lives as a bicycle courier. During the Nazi era, he hid documents in his bicycles and helped cover up the origins of his fellow Jews. At the same time he was a national hero as a cyclist.

May 5th marks the 20th anniversary of Gino Bartali's death. The Italian is a hero in two respects: as a cyclist he won the Tour de France twice and the Giro d'Italia three times, and as a courier he helped save hundreds of Jews in his homeland during World War II.
