Giro Rosa: Eva Lechner and Elena Valentini at the start

A total of 20 teams from all over the world are taking part in the nine-day road tour. The starting signal will be fired on July 4th in Caserta (CE) and the final stage will end nine days later in Masonna del Ghisallo (CO). The total distance is 953 km and the longest stage, the third section from Caserta to San Donato Val di Comino, measures 125 km.

Among the participants is, on the one hand Eva Lechner. The 29-year-old Eva Lechner from Eppan is setting off today to compete with the “Rusvelo” team. Lechner normally drives for Colnago, but on the road she has just joined the Russian racing team. “I will do this race for training purposes, because it's the second half of the season and I've always been in good shape after such tours. “I’m really looking forward to the outcome,” says Lechner. The nine-day stage race is the longest of Lechner's career; previously she had only completed tours of up to six stages. The next race she will take part in is the Italian Mountain Bike Championships in Gorizia, where she wants to defend her title. Then there are the MTB World Cup races overseas, where she wants to get back on the road to success.

Next to Lechner is with Elena Valentini another top local cyclist there. The 22-year-old from Talferstadt is racing for BTC City Ljubljana, a Slovenian racing team. However, it doesn't appear to be on the start lists Anna Zita Stricker (Astana Bepink Women Team).

Giro Rosa: Eva Lechner and Elena Valentini at the start

The 4th edition of the Giro Rosa, the Tour of Italy on racing bikes for women, begins on Friday July 25th in Caserta (CE). Two South Tyrolean cycling specialists will also be at the start, namely the two-time Olympic mountain bike participant Eva Lechner (Eppan) and Elena Valentini from Bolzano.
