International cycling event in Kastelbell sets a special example

On Sunday, Kastelbell once again took center stage for inclusive sports. For the 27th time, the International Cycling Criterium was held by the VSS Department for Disabled Sports, the ASV Kastelbell-Ciardes, and the South Tyrol Sports Group for the Physically Disabled.

Numerous athletes from all over South Tyrol participated in the popular handbike and cycling race. What makes this cycling criterium special is that people with a wide range of disabilities—deaf, blind, visually impaired, physically disabled, amputees, and Special Olympics participants—compete together.

"The focus here is on meeting people, sharing ideas, and enjoying physical activity," emphasized Markus Kompatscher, VSS representative for disabled sports and president of the sports group for the physically disabled. From the very beginning, the criteria was also open to people without disabilities.

The official kickoff was given by State Health Minister Hubert Messner. A strong signal for the connection between sport and social responsibility. The awards ceremony was held by Deputy Mayor Daniel Alber, Sports Officer Simon Moringgele, and VSS representatives Paul Romen, Thomas Tiefenbrunner, Josef Platter, Christiane Warasin, and Markus Kompatscher. The 27th edition once again demonstrated how inclusive sport builds bridges between people and different worlds.
