Karl Schuster: 20.000 bicycle kilometers in one year

Over the past few months, Karl Schuster has cycled the Rasen – Kiens route to work every day. And back again, of course (102 times). In addition, there are the long weekend tours of up to 300 km at a time, as well as the company holidays, which Schuster usually spends cycling. He covers the majority of the total kilometers on his racing bike, while cross bikes and mountain bikes are always used when the conditions on the roads are difficult.

The fact that he sometimes has to use a headlamp on all of his excursions or constantly looks nervously out the window in the pouring rain before he can leave work on his bike in the evening is part of such demanding challenges, as Schuster explains with a smile.

Most people only realize how many hours you have to spend on the saddle to cycle 20.000 kilometers when they don't even cover this distance by car in a year. Karl Schuster only starts training on the bicycle ergometer in the basement at the beginning of March, and by mid-November he usually no longer feels like pedaling, especially since there are other (culinary) events on the program.

The three and a half months in which the 48-year-old is not on his bike are divided into two and a half months of mountain hiking, running and cross-country skiing and a four-week break from training.

Karl Schuster: 20.000 bicycle kilometers in one year

The Rasner extreme athlete Karl Schuster set a new personal record on November 7, 2016. First he was aiming for 18.000 km, then 19.000 and when the 20.000 km was finally within reach, the “Schuischta-Tatte”, as his friends affectionately call him, gritted his teeth again.
