“The home stage appealed to me,” said Franz Hofer. “We were two minutes behind the leaders on the Vöraner Alm, but we didn’t give up. I know almost every stone in this area and that is definitely an advantage. But then we also benefited from the bad luck of our competitors,” admits Hofer. This refers to Alban Lakata and Kristian Hynek, who were in second place overall after three stages. Because of a broken rear wheel, Hynek had to walk the last few kilometers. The Austrian-Czech duo crossed the finish line in seventh place and fell two places down in the overall standings. The victory went to the German defending champions Markus Kaufmann and Jochen Käß (3:22:25), who were 2.18 minutes faster than Daniel Geismayer and Hannes Genze.

Andreas Laner and Massimo Debertolis won the masters ranking for the fourth time in a row (3:45:41.8). Before the fifth stage, they are 55 minutes ahead of overall runners-up Thorsten Damm and Martin Hollerbach from Germany in the category ranking.

Heinz Zörweg (AUT) and Andrew Mclean (RSA) continue to dominate in the Grand Masters. After Walter Platzgummer and his Trentino partner Piergiorgio Dellagiacoma were penalized for a mishap yesterday and were relegated to tenth place, they took second place for the third time today.

Daniel Jung from Laces and his Norwegian partner Kristin Aamodt narrowly missed the podium in the mixed classification and secured fourth place on the day. Sally Bigham and Ben Thomas from Great Britain won for the fourth time in a row.

Tomorrow we continue to Kaltern. The fifth stage over 67,42 km/2.785 m above sea level leads from Sarnthein first to the Stoanernen Mandln, via Mölten the participants cycle down to Vilpian, on to Nals and from there up to the Gantkofel. You then drive down the Eppaner Höhenweg to your destination in Kaltern.
