Veronika Widmann is in the final.

To kick things off: Widmann gets his ticket to the final

Veronika Widmann made it into the final of the top 15 at the opening round of the Downhill World Cup in Bielsko-Biala, Poland, on Saturday. The Tramin native had to tremble a little.

The Downhill World Cup has a new format this year. The controversial semifinals, introduced in 2023, are a thing of the past. Instead, there are now two qualifying rounds: In Quali 1, the top ten riders advance directly to the final, and in Quali 2, another five can secure their spot. This season, no seeded riders are available; every competitor must fight for their place in the final.

After the first qualifying run, Widmann was still nervous, having missed the qualification by a relatively clear margin, finishing 17th. However, the 32-year-old did better in the second run and qualified for the final in third place.

The finale is scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday. Widmann will compete this season for the Mondraker Factory Team; she previously drove for Continental Nukeproof/Continental GT Racing for two years.
