Irresistible Pogacar extends lead

Cycling world champion Tadej Pogacar once again outwitted the competition on the 7th stage of the Tour of the Dauphiné.

The 26-year-old Slovenian from Team UAE celebrated a solo victory on Saturday after almost 132 km at the mountain finish in Valmeinier at over 1.800 m above sea level. Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard (Visma) finished second, 14 seconds behind, while German Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull/+1:21 min) took third place. With his 98th career victory, Pogacar extended his overall lead.

The three-time Tour de France winner put on a demonstration of strength on the queen stage, with almost 5.000 meters of elevation gain on the 16-km final climb. Twelve kilometers from the finish, Pogacar launched an attack that no one could follow. Only Vingegaard kept the gap to a minimum, and in the end, the riders shared the same stage podium as the previous day and the overall standings.

Pogacar now heads into Sunday's Dauphiné finale, which will take him over 1:01 minutes ahead of Vingegaard and 2:21 minutes ahead of Lipowitz, with a 133-km lead up to the Plateau du Mont-Cenis, with a finish at 2.097 meters. Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal), who finished fifth on the day, losing 2:39 minutes to the leader, is already more than four minutes behind.
