Bolzano sports student David Fanelli wins 100.000 euros

The ARD program “Deutscher Meister 2013” is probably one of the most exciting competitions that has ever been broadcast on German television. In three preliminary decisions over the past few weeks, nine candidates were crowned “German champions” in highly unusual disciplines, such as horizontal bar climbing, stacking cubes on the flat of the hand, jumping rope with the bottom or backwards high jump on the wall. On Saturday, the newly crowned German champions had to face a top-class European opponent in their discipline in a big final show.

One of these opponents was David Fanelli from Bolzano. The 20-year-old, who can often be found on the Talferwiesen in the state capital, is a master of parkour, a form of transportation whose goal is to get from one point to another as efficiently as possible using only the abilities of your own body. Fanelli loves risk, the adrenaline rush and the freedom of movement. No obstacle is too high for the health and competitive sports student. He competed in the "backward high jump on the wall" against German champion Amadei Weiland. The 25-year-old from Berlin has been doing parkouring for ten years and holds the world record for the “Longest Wall Run” over 3,49 meters. A week ago he became German champion in the backward high jump on the wall. In this spectacular discipline you have to jump as high as possible by doing a backflip. To do this you first have to run up a wall. The height is measured with a high jump bar. Weiland managed an impressive 3,40m in the preliminary decision.

Fanelli achieves 3,80m in the "backward high jump on the wall" The finale was hard to beat in terms of excitement. Fanelli managed the entry height of 3,10m in the first attempt, then 3,30m, 3,50m, 3,60m and 3,70m. His opponent Weiland also jumped over these heights, but needed a second attempt four times. Fanelli also made a mistake for the first time at 3,80m, but managed the height on the second attempt. Weiland, however, failed and so Fanelli was crowned European champion and pocketed 5.000 euros in prize money.

But things were to get even better for the man from Bolzano. Because the television audience then voted him the overall winner of this crazy show. Fanelli received over 30 percent of the votes cast. This victory brought him an additional 100.000 euros in prize money, which was presented to him by Kai Pflaume, the prominent referees Judith Rakers and Katarina Witt and the reigning Miss Germany Caroline Noeding.

For Bozen sports student David Fanelli, taking part in the grand finale of the ARD live show “German Champion 2013” paid off on Saturday evening. The 20-year-old was voted overall winner by the television audience and received a whopping 100.000 euros in prize money from presenter Kai Pflaume.
