Günther Andergassen remains at the head of the VSS

Andergassen and Pichler were confirmed in office by acclamation in the fully occupied Elena Wach Hall of the Hotel Sheraton in Bolzano. The two, who have headed the VSS since 1999, were elected for another four years. In the district elections before the general meeting, new district managers were elected in four of eight districts. These are Thomas Ladurner (Burggrafenamt), Ivan Bott (Überetsch/Unterland), Willy Marinoni (Pustertal) and Richard Nagler (Gadertal). Josef Platter (Vinschgau), Paul Romen (Bozen Stadt und Land), Oskar Insam (Gröden) and Sigurth Wachtler (Isarco Valley) were confirmed. At the beginning of the year, Klaus von Dellemann replaced Manfred Call as managing director of the VSS after 23 years.

In the European Year of Volunteering 2011, the VSS set the general meeting and the sports year under the motto "People move people". “8300 officials and 3500 unpaid employees and specialists do great work to move people,” said Andergassen. The moments that South Tyrol's top athletes gave the population were also moving. 28 medals at world and European championships, including ten world championship titles, are a great record. Andergassen once again referred to the VSS's youth development programs, which have existed for 40 years and which form the foundation for the sporting successes.

Looking back at 2010 and on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the VSS, Andergassen particularly highlighted the conference “Out - Promoting - Youth Sports”. "I think that the VSS has shown with this conference that it deals with current issues in sport with great seriousness and the necessary ability to reflect.

For the future, Andergassen therefore calls for greater consideration of pedagogical principles in the sports support of children and young people and for the non-competitive sports offering to be expanded.

In 2011, the VSS will increasingly rely on further training, "because innovation can only be achieved through education," said the chairman. The VSS will soon start training to become a sports instructor. A course to become a successful club official begins in the fall. The “School and Sports Club” pilot project also starts this year. In addition, the VSS is in the process of creating an exercise and sports program for seniors together with the AVS and the KVW seniors' department.

Addressing politicians, Andergassen called for the future more say in questions regarding the planning of sports infrastructure. He was pleased that the wishes of the VSS had been taken into account in the upper school reform and expressly welcomed the approval of the state priority on sport for Mals and Vipiteno. In his speech, State Governor Luis Durnwalder praised the VSS for its commitment to youth sports and described it as the core task of the VSS to motivate young people for sport.

Coach & Trainer of the Year The “Trainer of the Year” award was presented for the seventh time this year. The 2010 award winners are the handball coach Istvan Balogh and the former track and field athlete Renate Schäfer. The former Hungarian junior national player Istvan Balogh has been responsible for the young handball team at SSV Bozen for 22 years with great success and has won over 40 national and more than 30 regional championship titles with his teams. Renate Schäfer was an active member of the national athletics team. Since 2002, the Innich native has been a trainer at the ASV Hochpustertal Triathlon, where she looks after, among others, the European youth triathlon champion Matthias Steinwandter.

Honors & Awards On the occasion of the general meeting, chairman Günther Andergassen awarded the certificate of honor and the gold badge of honor of the VSS to several people: to the outgoing VSS district representatives Erwin Lösch (Burggrafenamt), Franz Rieder (Pustertal), Hubert Valentini (Gadertal), Alois Zwerger (Überetsch/ Unterland), to the outgoing speaker for disabled sports Herbert Alber, to the previous speaker for swimming, Ingo Seyr, to the former deputy state governor Otto Saurer, and to the president of ASVÖ Tirol, Hansjörg Mader.

Key data on the VSS The VSS, as a representative of the German and Ladin-speaking sports clubs in South Tyrol, is the association with the largest membership in South Tyrol with over 83.000 members. It includes 16 presentations. With 508 clubs and 1124 sections, the VSS has reached a new high. In 2010, more than 16.000 athletes took part in a variety of VSS competitions. The VSS spent 384.000 euros on youth development last year.
