Sigi's Peaks: Dangerous longing for the summit

By Sigi Heinrich Undoubtedly, the last few weeks have not been easy and more than once the view from the window has wandered greedily up to the surrounding peaks (because no matter where you live in South Tyrol, the Dolomites are a defining feature of the eye). In April, which was so wonderfully mild, they still wore an innocent white cap. And even then, many people inevitably had the idea that they would want to get closer to the object of their longing at the first opportunity with a walking stick and sturdy shoes. But of course this first required permission to leave the confines of the apartment. The quarantine has initially banned spring tours. In the meantime, one could feast on Friedrich Schiller, who once dedicated his own wonderful poem to longing in 1801, which said, among other things: “… and the air on those heights, oh how refreshing it must be.” Pelicans in action So now let's get up. In the circle of friends we discuss possible tours, because it is also clear that the routes have to be adapted to the physical condition, which is rather poor due to the standstill during the crisis. The motto should be slowly. After all, the mountains don't run away. The longing for a view down into the valley has its pitfalls. If you want too much the first time, you are putting yourself in danger. And the helicopter engines are already roaring into the silence of the steep walls. The South Tyrol Heli-Air Rescue is in action. The saying about arrogance, which rarely does any good, is particularly true in the mountains. And so the “Pelicans” were in constant use right from the first beautiful days in the mountains. There were even the first deaths. Longing is a dangerous guide in these cases. Sometimes less would be more. However, Schiller fuels the urgent desire for mountain air. “There in the eternal sunshine,” he writes enthusiastically. And in the end he even calls on people to set out to achieve the goal of their longing (which may also apply to love). Even though Schiller is better known for his dramas, there is a playful lightness to his poetry that can seduce. A little quarantine But now - and perhaps this is even fortunate - the urge to satisfy the longing for the mountains will probably be interrupted for the time being, because a weather phenomenon that can often be observed at the beginning of June is taking hold this year. The “sheep cold” causes a veritable drop in temperature due to cold and moist air flowing in from the northwest. It is anyway astonishing and surprising that the farmers' calendar is being followed almost meticulously in this Corona year. Even the cold Sophie didn't give up this time. There may even be snowfall far up there. Nature is forcing another little quarantine on us, which, now that we have experienced these things, we can easily handle it. Hopefully the Pelicans can stay grounded while we can pursue other desires. There are enough of them.
