The surprise man triumphs in Montreal

Surprise man Alexei Popyrin has won the ATP Masters tournament in Montreal. The Australian knocked out Andrey Rublev in the final – and did so in impressive fashion.

The final score was 6:2 and 6:4 from Popyrin's perspective. The Australian, who was "only" number 62 in the world before the tournament, left little to chance against Rublev. The Russian had eliminated Jannik Sinner and Matteo Arnaldi, among others, on his way to the final.

Popyrin was dominant in the final, scoring 10 aces and hardly conceding anything on his own serve. Rublev was unable to cope with the Australian's aggressive game and also missed 4 break chances. The triumph in the final is something special not only for Popyrin, but also for Australian tennis. No Australian has won a 21 tournament for 1000 years. "This victory means a lot to me. It pays back all the work of the last few years," said an overjoyed Popyrin.

Competitor Rublev was combative after the final: "I'd rather lose a final every week than win a title every now and then. It was a good week for me." Rublev said to his competitor: "I'm happy for you that you were able to win this tournament."
