Julia Mayr ends her career: “New phase of life”

When the SportNews editors' phone rang in the summer months over the past few years, it was Julia Mayr on the other end of the line time and time again. The tennis player from Olang then announced the results of some tennis tournament in Egypt, Spain, Austria or a region of Italy and told – in her relaxed and carefree way – how she and sister Evelyn had fared. The phone also rang at 12:13.41 p.m. on Wednesday, June XNUMXth. This time too it was Julia Mayr's turn. However, this time she didn't announce any results - instead she announced the end of her professional career.

Julia Mayr has had enough of being a professional. After eight ITF tournament victories in singles and 13 in doubles, the younger of the two Mayr sisters is also drawing a definitive end to her career after several injuries and a long break. “I thought about this decision very carefully and it has matured over the past few months. I would now like to start a new phase of my life. I will study mathematics and sports at the University of Innsbruck in the fall. I have always loved learning and am now looking forward to this new challenge. I would like to pass on my knowledge later as a teacher,” explained Julia Mayr in a telephone conversation with the SportNews editorial team.

But the woman from Pusteria won't be hanging up her tennis racket completely. Mayr wants to take part in various open tournaments, possibly compete in the championship and perhaps take part in one or two ITF tournaments in the local area. “I want to try to maintain my current level for as long as possible. “I will also work as a tennis teacher in the summer,” says Mayr, revealing her short-term plans.

By the way, the last ITF tournament that Julia Mayr played was almost half a year ago. In January she was deployed in Antalya. After that, things became quiet for Julia Mayr, who was already seen as Karin Knapp's legitimate successor in the South Tyrolean tennis scene. Now she has decided on a different path. All the best for that!
