Who will be South Tyrol's new tennis boss?

The tennis association is the third largest in the country, behind football and winter sports, and ahead of the ice sports association. 83 clubs have a total of 8000 members, and 75 clubs are eligible to vote. The new elections were actually supposed to take place on November 22nd. But Weißensteiner's resignation, not without discord, after 12 years at the head of the association, caused the "delay". The entire previous board also resigned along with him. Now the positions have been filled. The association is facing a new beginning.

There are 2 candidates for the presidency: Marco Cordaro, currently vice-president of TC Bruneck, is a 3.4 player. Jacob Nicolussi from Welschnofen plays for TC Gemeinde Bozen, division 3.3. Both are running for the office. Whoever receives the most votes on Friday will win.

There will definitely be a young president, because Cordaro is only 23 years old and a magician in his spare time (“Magic Marco”). Nicolussi was one of the best players in the country a decade ago at TC Rungg when he was trying to turn professional. Nicolussi studied in the USA, played at college and is 30 years old.

Marco Cordaro also wants to become president.

There are 6 candidates for the four-member board: Paolo Lisciotto (TC Branzoll), Patrizia Mairhofer (TC Urtijei), Günther Messner (Tennis Brixen), Karl Stuefer (TC Rungg), Thomas Toniatti (TC St. Lorenzen) and VSS speaker Stefanie Unterweger from Auer.

s+ asked the two presidential candidates what they want to do better or change in the future.

What motivated you to run for president?

Cordaro: "I have been vice president of TC Bruneck for several years, have been to tournaments and to Rome and have seen how the FITP works. That has always interested me. Now the opportunity has arisen to perhaps do that at the state level."

Nicolussi: "Tennis gave me a lot as a young player. I want to give something back, that was my first thought. I met with Richard Weißensteiner. Tennis is growing in South Tyrol like never before and maybe never again. We are experiencing a boom. We need new momentum."

What do you want to change if you are elected on Friday?

Nicolussi: "The most important thing is to promote young people. That's where everything starts, then the future is secured. But it's also about getting adults to play tennis."

Cordaro: "The format for the team championships could be changed, something new could be introduced. It is important to me to have a structured and accessible tournament calendar. I want good dialogue and good cooperation with all clubs. Not to forget the training and further education of tennis teachers."

South Tyrol has the best player in the world in Jannik Sinner, but not everything that glitters is gold in this country.

Cordaro: "It's difficult to find something that doesn't work in South Tyrol. Sinner alone brings many players to tennis. There's not much going wrong in South Tyrol. We need to make even more use of Sinner's momentum."

Nicolussi: "You have to bring the clubs together and not the other way around. Tennis thrives on togetherness, it connects people. That is the be-all and end-all. It also needs optimal conditions, modern and well-equipped, improved infrastructure for training, competitions and the community within the club."

Who will be South Tyrol's new tennis boss?

Three months ago, Richard Weißensteiner unexpectedly resigned as president of the regional tennis association. On Friday, a successor for the Eggental sports official will be sought in the House of Sports in Bolzano.
