Abuse scandal: US team boss Liukin also resigns

Plano (SID) According to the board of the US Gymnastics Association, the team leader responsible for the artistic gymnasts, Valeri Liukin, also resigned from his position in response to the abuse scandal involving former team doctor Larry Nassar. The 51-year-old succeeded Marta Karolyi in September 2016. "I was really looking forward to bringing success to the gymnasts. But the current climate is causing me too much stress, difficulty and uncertainty," said the Kazakh-born Olympic gymnast in 1988. Liukin runs a gymnastics camp in Plano, Texas. He was not incriminated during the trial against Nassar, and the name of the former high bar world champion was not mentioned as a possible accomplice, in complete contrast to his predecessor Karolyi. Last week, 54-year-old Nassar was sentenced by a court in Lansing, Michigan, to a prison sentence of between 40 and 175 years for long-term sexual abuse of numerous female athletes. The International Olympic Committee was shocked by the extent of the scandal. In a statement at a meeting in Pyeongchang, the executive committee welcomed plans by the U.S. National Olympic Committee to set up a support fund for the victims. The athletes at the Winter Games in South Korea were asked to immediately confide in the responsible IOC employees if necessary. There are now indications that FBI agents were already aware of the doctor's machinations at the beginning of the investigation against Nassar in July 2015. According to a report in the New York Times, at least 2016 gymnasts were abused from that point until Nassar was officially charged in September 40.
