Second European Championship gold for Tania Cagnotto

Together with Francesca Dallapè, the 25-year-old from Bolzano won with 320,40 points ahead of the Russians Nadezda Bazhina and Svetlana Philippova (317,13) and the Germans Katja Dieckow/Uschi Freitag (295,50).

After the first two jumps, the “Azzurre” were in the front. The Cagnotto/Dallapè duo missed the third a little and fell back to second place with the fifth-best performance. Even after the fourth jump, the Italian national team divers were still behind, but caught up and with the last set they took the lead again and won gold.

For Tania Cagnotto it is the 18th medal in her career, the 14th at the European Championships, the third in Turin, after gold on the 1m board and bronze on the 3m board.

The 1-year-old from Bolzano celebrated her third European Championship title in a row both on the 3m board and in synchronized jumping on the 25m board. She also set a new European record on the 1m board with 312,05 points (her previous record was 308,75 points, set last year at the Italian Championships in Bergamo).

“I will celebrate these two titles at home in Bolzano,” said Cagnotto happily. “On Thursday we are already heading towards Russia, where the Word Series will take place. For us they are a test for the World Cup in Shanghai 2011, our next big goal. We will give our medal in synchronized diving from the 3m board to President Giorgio Napoletano. This is our contribution to the 150th anniversary of Italian unity.”

Maicol Scuttari 11th in diving

Today the men's diving event also took place in Turin, which was dominated by the German athletes. Gold went to Sascha Klein, silver to his compatriot Patrick Hausding. Oleksandr Bondar from Ukraine came third, Maicol Scuttari came eleventh. On Saturday, the 20-year-old from Bolzano took a good 5th place in the synchronized jumping from the 10 m tower with his Bolzano Nuoto teammate, Maicol Verzotto.
