End of career: The sad resignation of Tiril Eckhoff

Marte Olsbu Røiseland, Denise Herrmann-Wick and Anais Chevalier-Bouchet: These three stars have made their departure from the sport of biathlon public in the past few hours. Now comes the next big thing: Tiril Eckhoff will no longer continue her glorious career. The 32-year-old announced this on social media on Wednesday evening.

The Eckhoff case is a very special one. The Norwegian fell ill with Corona immediately after last year's season finale in Oslo. Afterwards, nothing was the same: the 2021 overall World Cup winner did not compete in a single race in the current season. She still suffers from sleep problems to this day, which “I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy,” Eckhoff said in an interview with NRK Early February. The ski hunter was already toying with the idea of ending her career, but now this scenario has become reality.

She wanted to continue, but... “In March last year I won two races at Holmenkollen. I didn't know back then that these would be my last victories. The plan was to keep going. If I stop now, I still think I'll finish at the top. I finished with two home wins in front of a fantastic crowd, friends and my closest family,” Eckhoff wrote in an emotional statement. “It’s a little sad to give up, but at the same time I think it’s the right decision.”

Eckhoff's sporting career is impressive. The biathlete from Bærum won no fewer than 15 World Championship medals (five of which were in individual disciplines) as well as eight Olympic medals (four of which were in individual disciplines). Eckhoff celebrated her greatest success in the 2020/21 season when she became the overall World Cup winner. “I am proud of what I have achieved and will always look back on my years as a biathlete with a smile,” Eckhoff concludes her post and thus her career.
