She has been the biggest absentee in this biathlon season so far: overall World Cup winner Lisa Vittozzi. Now the Italian has spoken out for the first time in a long time.

Things have been quiet around Lisa Vittozzi recently. Very quiet, in fact. If there have been any updates, then only from Italy's winter sports association FISI, there have been monosyllabic updates on the condition of the reigning overall World Cup winner. According to reports, the star biathlete has back problems that are so bad that she has not been able to compete in any races this season - and will not return until 2025.

Vittozzi herself has not addressed the public during these difficult weeks. Her last self-written post on Instagram was published on November 8th. Since then: silence. Until Wednesday. Then the 29-year-old sent a sign of life to her many fans at home and abroad.

"I've been away for a while, but as you may know, the last two months have been very difficult for my health," Vittozzi wrote. "It wasn't easy to make the decision to stop competing - and especially to accept it. But this time I had to listen to my body."

The multiple World Championship medalist added some photos of herself training to this post. "I'm doing my best to get healthy again and get back to what I love," Vittozzi assured, adding: "Thank you to everyone who has been by my side during this time, supporting me and comforting me."

Vittozzi recently trained in Obertilliach and is working on her comeback. She will continue her individual training in the next few days. The goal is to take part in the first competitions of the new year. These will take place from January 9th to 12th in Oberhof. For the other biathletes, the last World Cup stage of the year is still to come this weekend in Le Grand-Bornand.
