Grassl finishes World Cup below expectations

For Daniel Grassl, the World Figure Skating Championships in Boston (USA) didn't go as hoped. Although the Merano native improved his performance in the free skate, it wasn't enough to place him at the top.

Daniel Grassl wasn't satisfied with his 14th place finish after the short program. The South Tyrolean figure skater wanted to improve in the free skate – which took place overnight into Sunday – and thus move up the rankings. He only partially succeeded.

Grassl finished 12th in the free skate. While that was enough to move up one place in the overall ranking, he couldn't do any better. Grassl finished the World Figure Skating Championships in Boston in 242,31th place with 13 points, making him the second-best Azzurro behind Nikolaj Memola (10th).

Gold goes to Malinin

With a breathtaking jumping display, American Ilia Malinin defended his title at the World Figure Skating Championships in Boston. The 20-year-old performed six perfect quadruple jumps in his free skate, living up to his nickname "Quadruple God."

Malinin, who had already led after the short program, finished the championships with 318,56 points, leaving his competitors far behind. Mikhail Shaidorov (287,47 points) of Kazakhstan finished second, ahead of Yuma Kagiyama of Japan (278,19 points).
